Part 15 : Quick Reference & Diagnostic Tools

Knowing what to do when things go sideways

If you are worried – this will help you getting on the right track

Part 1: Visual Symptom Diagnostic Flowchart

Phase 1: Leaf & Trap Observations

  • Traps are turning black/brown rapidly:
    • Is it only old, outer leaves? Normal Senescence. Trim dead tissue to prevent fungal spores.
    • Is it new growth or entire crowns? Check Water TDS (> 50 PPM) or Fungal Crown Rot (Pythium).
  • Foliar loss of sticky dew (Drosera, Pinguicula):
    • Are leaves stretched and pale green? Light Deficiency. Increase PAR intensity (> 150umol/m2/s).
    • Are leaves covered in fine webbing or silvery speckles? Spider Mites. Apply Abamectin/Miticide; increase relative humidity (> 65%).
    • Is substrate dry or water mineral-heavy? Water Stress. Flush soil with 0 PPM RO water.
  • Deformed, twisted, or curled spring growth:
    • Check under leaves and inside new trap folds with a 10 X hand lens. Aphids. Apply Acetamiprid drench or submerge plant in pure water for 24–48 hours.

Phase 2: Root & Substrate Observations

  • White cottony patches in leaf axils or soil surface:
    • Foliar crevices: Mealybugs. Dab with 70% Isopropyl alcohol.
    • Substrate/roots: Root Mealybugs. Drench with systemic Acetamiprid; rinse roots in pure RO water during repotting.
  • Foul rotting odor from pot / roots black and mushy:
    • Anaerobic Crown/Root Rot (Pythium / Phytophthora). Unpot immediately, trim rotten tissue, drench with Bacillus subtilis or Mefenoxam, and repot in highly aerated media.
  • Green crust or white crusting on top of peat:
    • Green layer: Algae growth (Harmless, but indicates high moisture/light; top-dress with sand or perlite).
    • White crust: Mineral Salt Accumulation (Lethal; flush media immediately until drainage TDS reads < PPM).

Part 3: Emergency First-Aid Protocols

1. The Substrate Flushing Protocol (Mineral Burn / High TDS)

  1. Suspend bottom-tray watering immediately.
  2. Pour pure Reverse Osmosis (RO) or distilled water (0 – 10 PPM) through the top of the pot until water runs freely out of the drainage holes.
  3. Continue pouring until the runoff water TDS reads within 10 PPM of your input water (target runoff < 30 PPM).
  4. Discard all drained runoff; never leave the pot sitting in flushed mineral water.

2. The Crown Rot Emergency Rescue

  1. Unpot the plant immediately and rinse all old substrate away from the root zone using cold pure water.
  2. Using a blade sanitized with 70% Isopropyl alcohol, slice away all black, brown, or mushy tissue until you reach clean, firm, white/green tissue.
  3. Dip the remaining rhizome/crown in a biological fungicide solution (Bacillus subtilis) or 3% diluted Hydrogen Peroxide for 30 seconds.
  4. Repot into 100% fresh, sterile Long-Fiber Sphagnum (LFS) moss mixed with coarse perlite. Keep damp, out of direct intense sun, under high humidity until new growth emerges.

Master Curriculum Completion Checklist

1.Water & Substrate Purity Secured:Pure water & mineral monitoring verified.

TDS meter calibrated and verified < 50 PPM; substrate mixes free of added lime or commercial fertilizers.

2.Photoperiod & Light Targets Set:Lighting setup matched to target genus.

PAR/PPFD targets measured across grow shelves, windowsills, or greenhouse tunnels.

3.Biological & Chemical Controls Ready:Carnivore-safe pest controls on hand.

Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI), Acetamiprid, Abamectin, and 70% alcohol stocked; copper sprays strictly eliminated.

4.Enclosure & Seasonal Controls Operational:Microclimate airflow and temperature drop ready.

Internal air circulation fans operational; seasonal dormancy or succulent phase triggers planned.
