Part 14 : Essential Care Sheet Parameters

What should you know before you buy a carnivorous plant

Get this right and your carnivorous plants WILL REWARD YOU

The 5 Core Care Sheet Essentials

1. Light Requirements

  • Direct Sun vs. Indirect Light: Specify if the plant needs full outdoor sunlight (Sarracenia, Dionaea) or bright, indirect light (Pinguicula, Nepenthes).
  • Artificial Lighting (Terrariums/Grow Lights): Note if standard LED grow lights are sufficient, including recommended light height and daily hours ( photoperiod).

2. Ideal Growing Location

  • Outside / Garden: Best for cold-hardy species that need full sun and seasonal weather shifts.
  • Indoor / Windowsill: Best for adaptable species that thrive at room temperature.
  • Enclosed Terrarium / Cabinet: Required for high-humidity or temperature-sensitive tropicals.

3. Dormancy Needs

  • Mandatory Winter Rest: Species that drop leaves or form winter buds (hibernacula) and require 3–4 months of cold temperatures (Dionaea, temperate Drosera).
  • Dry / Succulent Rest: Species that switch to non-carnivorous succulent rosettes during dry seasons (Mexican Pinguicula).
  • No Dormancy: Tropical species that grow continuously year-round (Nepenthes, tropical Drosera).

4. Humidity & Airflow

  • Ambient Air (40% – 60%): Fine for household windowsills or outdoor setups.
  • High Humidity (70% – 90%): Requires glass enclosures, terrariums, or humidifiers to form pitchers or dew.
  • Air Circulation: Note if the plant needs active airflow to prevent crown rot in humid setups.

5. Water & Soil Basics

  • Watering Method: Tray method (standing in pure water) vs. overhead drenching.
  • Substrate Mix: Basic mix type (e.g., Peat + Perlite vs. Long-Fiber Sphagnum vs. Mineral/Pumice mix).
  • Water Purity: Remind growers to use distilled, RO, or rainwater below 50 PPM TDS.
